CTGI’s two projects in Pakistan were selected into major achievements released by UNGC

On October 16, 2023, in Beijing China, the United Nations Global Compact(UNGC) released important achievements on the Third "Belt and Road" International Cooperation Summit Forum.

The UNGC released five major achievements, in the presence of Ms. Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director General of the UNGC, representatives of the Chinese government, the High-Level Steering Committee of the Belt and Road Action Platform, ambassadors of various countries in China, and representatives of businesses and academia.The Three Gorges First Wind Farm and Karot Hydropower Project in Pakistan, both invested, constructed and operated by China Three Gorges International (CTGI), were selected into two of the five achievements, which are: Case Studies of Corporate Practices in Promoting Sustainable Development, Building a High-Quality Belt and Road, and Realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Global Compact Ten Principals Applied in Infrastructure Sectors under the Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)-A Practical Principal for Private Sector Players.

The Three Gorges First Wind Farm Project is a demonstration project of CTGI in practicing the "Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact" and the "United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)". CTGI showed a serious and responsible attitude in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, in terms of governance system, environmental performance, social performance and other dimensions.

The Karot Hydropower Plant was co-invested by CTGI, Silk Road Fund and International Finance Corporation (IFC). The project provides about 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, equivalent to 10 percent of Pakistan's 2017 national hydropower generation. It also meets the electricity needs of more than 2 million average households in Pakistan and reduces 2.7 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. The Karot Hydropower Plant was built with an in-depth understanding of Pakistan's local environmental laws, and the IFC's Environmental and Social Responsibility Framework was used as a reference. In addition, CTGI established operational standards and regulations for ecological protection during the operation period as well as carried out a serious of CSR projects for the improvement of life qualities of local communites in terms of infrastructure and education, etc. As a result, the project company were honored with the "Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility" award at the inaugural Pakistan State Electricity Regulatory Authority, Social Responsibility Award Ceremony.

CTGI strives to meet international ESG standards, and insists on fulfilling actively corporate social responsibilities and complying with the SDGs propoesd by United Nations, contributing to the "Belt and Road Initiative" towards the next glorious decade and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
